(Question: How, according to O’Brien, does the The Party as an oligarchy differ from Nazism or Russian Communism? How does he define the role of the martyr, both in terms of The Party and the other totalitarian systems?).

By: Karina Cerrato

What O’Brian tells us about the party been different form the nazis and he Russian communism is that they made their intentions clear. All the control they had was for one thing, power. He states that the nazis and Russians were very close t never recognize the real reason of doing it. Different for the nazis they don’t let anyone get up their level like they did in a limited time.
For the party if INGSOC there’s no martyr. The reason for that is by looking at the past de decades and totalitarian governments made. The first thing that happen was with the middles ages when they obligated the religion. If they were accuse of Heresy and were torture. At the end there were people that lie and end up rebelling. Later came the Russian revolution more powerful than the religion. Unfortunately he same mistake was made and the Russian communist was destroyed. What the party really tries to do is something more brainwashing. They get people to believe their truth rather than the real truth. The make them believe that two plus two is equals five and that peace is slavery.

“Within 200 yards of the apartment in which Orwell wrote 1984, there are now 32 security cameras.”

Orwell’s vision of a dystopian future has came true in many ways now in 2014-2015 as the following things that were in Orwell’s book of “1984”: The telescreens, DoubleThink and The memory hole. The telescreen in Orwell’ book were TV’s that were in public places and were a two-way TV’s in which they gave approved propaganda of the party and the TV’s spy the citizens. Now in 2014-2015 countries as U.S.A, London, etc. has security cameras on public places as parks, various streets and various places and if someone commits a infraction or a crime they can observe you through their cameras were you are or were are you going or they record you.

The DoubleThink in Orwell’s book was an act in which you accept two contradictions. This is happening now in various countries around the world for example in Honduras they wanted to create a law which was called ‘Ley Mostaza’ in which media can’t public too much things about crime to not stress people too much but in this same law media can’t public things that are happening inside the gorvernment only authorized things that the government accept so we can see that the government were wanting people to think that they wanted to control the media to them to not exagerate with the news and live in a less stressfull place but at the same time this law was to the government hide what there doing and people to not know what their doing.

For last we have the memory hole, in Orwell’s book the memory hole is a machine to dissapear incriminating or embarrasing documents. Now we have a machine very similar to that called the ‘Paper Shredders’ in which you can destroy any paper that you want and U.S.A president has one of this in his office in which he destroy every day a paper. In computers we can wipe its hard drive to erase any information or very important information that we don’t want to people know and in every country in the world the governments use computers.

With this quotation what Winston it’s trying to say is that the hope of a country is in the proles because the proles were the only people that could destroy the big brother party and the proles were the 85% of oceania and with the 85% of the proles being against the party oceania could return again to their normal lives withouth being controlled by somebody, and having full liberty, withouth news being changed or thing being changed to favor ther party and not living in a false world instead they would live in a real world.

The dream of Winston was to live in a real world and not in a false world so the dream of winston was that the big brother party came down and dissapear and he saw that the only people that could destroy the party were the proles because the proles were not with the party and they were very united and had humanity but as winston saw the proles had to wake up and stop being affraid of the big brother party and do something about the situation and Winston had hope that one day the proles will wake up and bring down the party.

So as we saw the only way to accomplish Winston ‘s dream of bringing the party down is that the imageproles could see the strength they have and they could wake up and attack the big brother’s party. The proles being the 85% of oceania population if they could wake up they have a 99% of winning and bringing the party down. If the party comes down oceania could live again as in their past being all of them free and having liberty and living in a true world and not in a false world but the proles have to wake up. “If there is hope it lies on the proles”.

I have seen many strange things since been in the party. This things may have been normal for any person belonging to the party but strange for me. The first thing I see at the beginning of the book is that while doing my morning exercise I thinks of the relationship of  Oceania with Eurasia and Eastasia. I realize that the party History tells that Oceania had been always enemies with Eurasia and in alliance with Eastasia but that’s not true. Another strange thing i thought since been in the party was the fact that Big Brother appear in 1930 even though i didn’t hear about him until 1960. Also Winston starts remembering the time were he caught the party lying in the 1960s. I remember seen some leaders of the party sitting in the Chestnut Tree Café were i took a picture of them telling they were once part of the league with the party and supposedly where at the party function force to confess to their false crimes. Unfortunately I destroy it since I was afraid of been caught. The children books i saw at a store tells how the party were the ones who made the buildings which it is all a lie. Ever since the party came to power I have left my family died and taking chocolate and never seen them again. Children now in the party cause their parents for thought crime and are proud of it, like the Parsons. There is no love or sex admitted in the party since they lose their love for big brother which in my opinion it’s nonsense. That’s why I hate big brother and this party.Character__Winston_Smith_by_deathend

soul     I agree with Winston’s statement, because the “spirit of man”, which could also be interpreted as our soul, is an intrinsic part of a person, the non-material part hehas dominion over. The problem with the society in 1984, is that an individual person who disagrees with the Party, just as Winston, can do very little to change the society he lives in. In order for the “spirit of man” to truly change society, it is necessary that the spirits of men (I mean, thousands of them) unite. It is really very easy to manipulate a single human being, but when you are faced with masses who demand change, then it is hard to deny them the change.

women rockHis belief is applicable today and will be applicable for the rest of human history. For instance, today we live in a society that already has certain ideals set for us, but together we are able to challenge these ideals everyday. An example would be gender inequality. In some countries, men and women are still seen as unequal. Women are challenging this belief by succeeding in their studies and prominent job positions. Who knows maybe some day gender inequality will be part of the past in every country of the world.

Winston’s thoughts on the “spirit of man” apply to history. In history, people have gotten together to overthrow incompetent or abusive leaders, because in their spirit, they are strong and determined in their right to do so. A clear example is the Russian Revolution. People couldn’t stand the incompetence of Tsar Nicholas II, so they got together in protests until he abdicated. Even the soldiers joined the people in the protests. The problem with the Rurussian revssian Revolution, is that people practically transferred power to communist leaders. People were resilient and kept fighting through the civil war. Then, when communist leaders didn’t fully fulfill their promises, people had to draw strength from their spirit once more in order to end with communism. Russian people really have gone through strong tests that prove the resiliency and righteousness of people, who mostly strive equality and freedom.

In 1984, Newspeak is the official lannewspealguage of Oceania. It was created to fulfillthe needs of INGSOC, or English Socialism, and to make other modes of thought impossible. It is expected that Newspeak is totally adopted by 2050, and by then all heretical thought should be impossible, because thought depends on words.

The vocabulary of Newspeak is constructed as to give exact and subtle expression to every meaning that a Party member could express, while excluding all other meanings and also the ossibility of arriving at them by other methods. This is done by the creation of new words, and elimination of old words that enclosed the meaning of an “unorthodox” action.

In order to better illustrate the use Newspeak, below this lines you can find an article, followed by its “translation” to Newspeak.

California’s Worst Drought Ever Is 1st Taste of Future

The drought now plaguing California is the worst to parch the central and southern parts of the state in the last 1,200 years, a new study finds.

The 2012 to 2014 drought’s lack of rain isn’t remarkable on its own, according to tree-ring records reported in the study. There have been three-year periods when less rain and snow fell. But the current drought comes at a time of extreme heat. Record-high temperatures exacerbated the drought, creating the driest soil conditions since the 9th century, according to the study, published Dec. 3 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

“Precimpressive droughtipitation is not the whole story for California drought,” said lead study author Daniel Griffin, a tree-ring researcher at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. “When we factor in temperature, this drought really stands out as an extreme and unprecedented case for the past 1,200 years.” [The 5 Worst Droughts in US History]

The new study was driven by curiosity, the researchers said. With the long view of a paleoclimatologist, co-author Kevin Anchukaitis said he was skeptical that the recent drought could be worse than some of California’s driest years. For instance, in 1580, one of the thirstiest years in the tree-ring record, rivers flowed at just a quarter of their usual volume, and giant sequoias grew no new wood. “Anytime you think it’s bad, we say, ‘You should have seen this [year],'” said Anchukaitis, a scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

California’s Doubleplusungood Dryness Everwise Is First Taste of Future

The dryness now hitting California is the doubleplusungooder to dry the central and southern parts of the country in the last 1,200 years, a present study finding.

The 2012 to 2014 dryness’ missing of rain is not doubleplusgood on it’s own, as shown from tree-ring records reported in the study. There have been three-year periods when unmore rain and snow fell. But the present dryness coming at a time of doubleplushigh warmth. Record-high temperatures doubleplusungooded the dryness, making the doubleplusdrier soil conditions since the 9th century, as shown by the study, published Dec. 3 in the newspaper Geophysical Rthisisdoubleplusungoodesearch Letters.

“Rain is not the whole story for California dryness.” worded directing study author Daniel Griffin, a tree-ring investigator at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. “When we point at temperature, this dryness stands out as a doubleplusplenty and unbefored case for the past 1,200 years.”[The 5 Doubleplusungood Drynesses in US History]

The present study was directed by questioning, the investigators said. With the stretchy view of a paleoclimatologist, co-author Kevin Anchukaitis worded he was doubtful that the new dryness could be doubleplusungooder than some of California’s doubleplusdriest years. For that, in 1580, one of the doubleplusthirstiest years in the tree-ring record, rivers moving at just a quarter of their usual volume, and doubleplusbig trees growing no wood. “Anytime we think it’s ungood, we word, “You should have seeing this year,”  worded  Anchukaitis, an investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachussets.

“War is Peace. Freedom Is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength.” These are three slogans of the Party, Ingsoc. But what do they mean?

Ingsoc sloganSONY DSC

“War is Peace” means that while Oceania is at war with other countries, the people will maintain united because they have a common enemy. Therefore, by keeping war, people don’t have enemies inside the country, because they are busy fighting enemies outside the country. In 1984, the war isn’t even necessary, but is kept as a means to control the people.
The contradiction with this quote is that obviously war and peace are opposites. People can’t have peace when they feel threatened by a war, even if it is a foreign war. In 1984, people feel threatened by rocket bombs and Eurasian soldiers, when the real threat is the Party itself.
While it is true that war may incite nationalism in a country, and people unite, it causes more tension and suffering than union.

“Freedom is Slavery” means that the man who follows his will isn’t really free, because he is unprotected from the failures he Freedom is Slaverycan get from bad decisions. Not following the Party is slavery, but by following the Party people are given the notion that they are getting the rights they need and that their life is better than it used to be. For the civilians in 1984 it makes sense, because they barely know what the past and freedom are. The Party had delineated freedom as the corrupt, what they shouldn’t do anyways.
The contradiction in this quote, as in the previous one, is that we are equating two opposites. People need freedom in order to know what freedom is. Freedom enables you to do as you want and believe. If you are a slave, you don’t have an identity because your master sets it for you.
While it is true that when you have freedom you can take many bad decisions, failing is a part of being human. No group of humans, not even Party members, can perpetually prevent people from failing.

“Ignorance is Strength” means that the least the people know the better, because they will not be able to contradict the Party. The Party calls any thought that goes against them “Thought Crime”, when in reality, people may just think what is factually true, not what the Party says is true. Besides, there is no way the people can contradict the Party witIgnorance is Strengthhout seeming to be wrong. The strength of the party relies in the ignorance of the people.
The contradiction in this quote is that as we see nowadays, the more knowledge you have the more powerful you are. This is because the person who has more information has more advantage in managing a situation. It’s easier for that person to convince others to follow him/her. Without knowledge, people are subject to obedience.
The Party is really clever in preventing some information to get to the people, because ironically knowledge is personal strength while ignorance is Party strength. So they aren’t really wrong in saying ignorance is strength, they are just wrong in making people believe that ignorance is the type of strength that is favorable for everyone.
